2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Response

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a more defined game identity.

The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to address community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment

This announcement echoes a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.

Here is the entire content from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a more distinct brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to heart and revamped the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our audience.

The belief in this project increases every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce the new hire as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of conversations, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

His management and expertise in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting Ben next week. We are all excited to keep observing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to come.

The President

Background of the New Leader

The appointee currently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in last year alongside a community playtest. Then, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that change every round. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, risk it all, and pray your squad can secure victory? The decision is up to you."

The game does not have an announced debut schedule or platforms, but fans can expect more updates as production progresses.
