New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
